The 3/50 Project- Pick 3, spend $50, save your local economy May 26, 2009

Last week while walking home from a birthday party, I stopped to look in the window of Nest, one of my favorite interior stores.  In the window they had a flyer for The 3/50 project, an initiative created by Cinda Baxter of Always Upward.  Her concept, commit to spending $50 each month at three local independent stores.  The facts speak for themselves and remind me that together we can have a tremendous impact on our economy.  This month my picks are Nest, Three Tarts and Billy’s Bakery.  What are yours?

Last week we had the opportunity to spend the day up at the Storm King Art Center.  Storm King is a sprawling 500 acre museum filled with sculptures by Alexander Calder, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Mark di Suvero, Richard Serra, Ursula von Rydingsvard and many others.  Imagine rolling hills, birds, wild flowers and the ability to wander and explore from all angles.  Regardless of the cloudy skies and sprinkles, it was a perfect way to spend a day.  We’ll no doubt be back again soon for a picnic and more wandering.

ww12

These lovelies, made of 100% wool, are crocheted by the amazingly talented hands of Sandra Juto in Gothenburg, Sweden.  I think I might have to get myself two pairs…

You can buy them here.

hello health part I April 9, 2009

hellohealth

Let’s see now….I’ve been sick for the past month

coughing √
larengitis √
sneezing √
sore throat √
swollen glands  √
pink eye in BOTH eyes √

Today I called Hello health.  The founder, Dr. Jay Parkinson recently presented at Pecha Kucha.

“Hello Health serves as your old-fashioned neighborhood doctor, remodeled for today’s lifestyle— an experience found nowhere else in health care. And, on top of being accessible and affordable, we focus on you, as a real live, busy person.”

How does it work you ask?  You pay $35/month, schedule your own appointment online and depending on your needs your appointment is billed accordingly.

Simple Visits (quick, easy or online)$100
Moderate Visits (the middle ground)$150
Complex Visits (long and complicated) $200

How exciting is it that I have an appointment booked next week with a doctor who:

-believes in treating the whole me
-treats the same problems and does the same procedures as any primary care doctor
-will email, IM and video chat with me if I need a followup or have a question
-gives free generic medications for urgent problems and online prescription refills.

Part II to follow after my appointment on Tuesday.  Stay posted.
