Breaking Down: Colors In Cultures January 4, 2012

I came across this infographic the other day and while I think the design of it isn’t necessarily the best solution to convey the information, I find the actual data really facinating.  The data is a good reminder that colors do in fact have different meanings in various cultures and countries.  As marketers we need to understand how our choices impact the products we sell and the messages we convey.  This emotional connection to the consumer is key and is one of the things that can turn a good campaign into a great one.

Breaking Down: A Year of Food June 23, 2011

2010 was a tedious year for New York designer Lauren Manning.  She spent the entire year documenting everything she ate, all in the name of her thesis project.  The purpose was to determine the most effective way to visualize information.   40 infographics later, the verdict was that “there is no one answer to which method and style should be used…different methods can all have a place when used in an appropriate setting.”  What is clear is that she has an affinity for chicken and doesn’t eat enough of those leafy greens!

Breaking Down: Gift Giving December 23, 2010

Collect money online, girl scouts, boy scouts, fraternity dues

According to the data,  $2.5 billion gift cards will go unused simply because people forget to use them or because they get thrown away.  Perhaps it is slightly depressing to see the act of gift giving broken down in this sort of way but it makes you rethink things, no?

Breaking Down: Vacation Time November 26, 2010

Unlike most countries around the world, U.S. companies are not required to give employees time off. Despite working some of the longest hours in the world, we take very little vacation.  So let’s relish these days off.  We clearly deserve them.

Breaking Down: Burning Man August 5, 2010

Off and on over the past ten years, I’ve told myself that I’d make it to Burning Man, which is known as one of the wildest, craziest, and to some, life changing experiences out there.  I have yet to make the journey, but every year when August rolls around and I hear whispers of people’s creations for the week long festival and my curiosity is once again piqued.  To deepen my fascination even further, I came across this infographic.  Never heard of Burning Man.  Check out some Flickr action here.
