Live: LCD Soundsystem March 30, 2011

Last night I went to Terminal 5 for one of LCD Soundsystem’s final five shows.  It was an incredible concert.  Three full hours of nonstop music, coupled with an amazing light show, made for the. best. concert. ever.  Seriously, it was that good.

If you’re not familiar with LCD, you should check them out.  And if you’re an LCD groupie/fan check out Pitchforks’s song by song breakdown here.

Welcome: Artspace March 29, 2011

I’m thrilled to announce that Artspace is officially live.  I’ve been busy working on this project for the past two months and am so excited that we’ve launched.

Founded by Catherine Levene (former COO and GM of Daily Candy) and Chris Vroom, Artspace is all about collecting art at affordable prices.  They work directly with the best contemporary artists to offer limited edition prints and original works by artists such as Clifford Ross, Nick Cave, Youngsuk Suh, Richard Misrach and Ross Bleckner.  While anyone can purchase from Artspace, they offer insider prices for members.  Check it out and become a member here.

You can also read more about Artspace here and here.

Discovered: Balancing Blocks March 24, 2011

I’m loving these colorful wooden blocks. Inspired by the art of rock balancing, each set contains ten blocks that are handmade in Brooklyn, NY from repurposed hardwood  that has been collected from local furniture shops.

Rainy Day Inspiration: Gauthier March 16, 2011

I am loving this clever holiday gift that the Canadian design firm Gauthier created for their clients this past year.  In an effort to encourage their clients to not buy plastic bottles, Gauthier surrounded the glass bottle with a number of sayings.

The messages on the interior reads:

“The earth is blue, the glass is green” “The glass comes and goes” “…. a life uncorked” “enough of the bottle, raise our glasses”

I love the simplicity of the outside packaging and the bold typography on the inside–such a nice contrast.

Discovered: Monique Péan March 8, 2011

Monique Péan, a former investment banker at Goldman Sachs, started taking design classes in her free time before realizing her passion was really in jewelry.  In 2006, she launched her line and has since been recognized by everyone from Michelle Obama to Vogue and most recently, Fast Company.

While all of her pieces are exquisite and sustainable, I found this necklace to be particularly stunning.  The piece is constructed out of fossilized walrus ivory and woolly-mammoth bone that is carved by hand and then finished with 18-karat rose gold, white diamonds and smoky topaz.

Team Work: A.P.C. + Jessica Ogden March 7, 2011

Last weekend I visited the new A.P.C. Special store on Perry Street. It’s a gorgeous store that focuses on their denim collection and a concept called A.P.C. Vintage, which are pieces from past collections. I also discovered these amazing limited edition quilts. Jean Touitou, founder of A.P.C., wanted to find a way to recycle years of archived A.P.C. fabrics so he consulted with Jessica Ogden, fellow designer and pioneer of salvage fashion, to craft these beauties. Jessica created a collection of seven quilts, which are handcrafted by a group of women in Bangalore and will be reproduced only 30 times.

Visit: Capricious March 3, 2011

One of my favorite spaces in our new new neighborhood, Capricious, is hunkering down and closing their gallery space so they can focus solely on their publications. The final show, “The Show Must Go On,” includes over 30 artists who have been involved in Capricious in one way or another including Isabel Asha Penzlien, Sophie Mörner, Sam Falls and Nicholas Gottlund.

Make sure to check it out before it closes on March 6, 2011.
